 Bone Disease CPM Project

Network 11 is pleased to announce a new project to develop bone disease clinical performance measures. The Renal Network of the Upper Midwest (Network 11) has been awarded a contract by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to develop clinical performance measures (CPMs) based on the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (K/DOQI) Bone Metabolism and Disease clinical practice guidelines.

Under CMS contract, the ESRD Networks are responsible to assess and improve the quality of care for patients with chronic kidney disease. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have increased risk for developing bone disease. The purpose of this project will be to develop CPMs, based on the K/DOQI bone guidelines that will be used to assess and improve the quality of treatment for renal bone disease.

This project will occur over one year from July 2004 through June 2005. As part of this contract, Network 11 will solicit input from the renal community to identify which CPGs are suitable for conversion to CPMs. A Technical Expert Panel will be convened to assist in the evaluation of the input and the measure development work. A meeting of ESRD stakeholders will be convened to review and give input regarding the recommended measures.

Network 11 is soliciting input from the renal community from September 1, 2004 – October 31, 2004. The input document is available on-line at or a print version is available on request from Network 11. To obtain a print version or for questions, please contact:
