The National Institute of
Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases
(NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health has
launched the National Kidney Disease Education Program
(NKDEP)
|
|
Working
through a Steering Committee, Work Groups and private and public partners,
NKDEP aims to reduce morbidity and mortality from kidney disease by raising
awareness about the seriousness of the problem and the importance of
prevention, early diagnosis, and appropriate management.
|
|
The program
will initially target primary care providers and people at highest risk for
kidney disease--particularly African Americans with diabetes, hypertension
and/or a family history of kidney failure--in four pilot cities:
• Baltimore, Maryland
• Atlanta, Georgia
• Jackson, Mississippi
• Cleveland, Ohio
|
|
The program has its own website, www.nkdep.nih.gov. At
this site healthcare providers can locate clinical tools, such as the formula
for estimating the GFR
Formula(glomerular
filtration rate found at http://nephron.com/cgi-bin/MDRD.cgi
from serum creatinine using a simple equation and the Body Mass Indexat (http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi),
which calculates
total body fat for adults using only weight and height.
|
|
In addition to clinical information, the website offers
educational materials including fact sheets and booklets about kidney disease
(many of which are available in Spanish) geared toward health professionals
and the public.
|
|
Material and links at the site should be of particular
use to people who have early kidney disease, those at risk for it, and their
healthcare providers. As the new website grows and expands in content, we
hope it will prove to be an increasingly valuable resource for providers,
patients, and those at risk for kidney disease.
