ESRD Conditions for Coverage
§ 494.60 Physical Environment
Beginning December 2010: Life Safety Code (LSC) surveys will be conducted in existing dialysis facilities.
Overview
Currently, surveys have only been conducted for new or renovated facilities and for complaints. This will change in December when existing facilities may be surveyed. A review of the code is essential for providers to know what is required of them for the Life Safety portion of the certification process. Providers should review Fire Safety requirements under Condition 494.60 Physical Environment [PDF, 71KB] in the Conditions for Coverage or V417 [PDF, 36KB] in the Interpretive Guidance.
Implementation
Compliance with the LSC was put into effect on February 9, 2009. Dialysis facilities were required to comply with Chapter 20 (for new dialysis facilities) or Chapter 21 (for existing dialysis facilities) of the 2000 edition of the Life Safety Code (LSC) for Ambulatory Health Care Occupancies of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 101. A copy of this code can be purchased from the National Fire Protection Association, Quincy, MA. Their web site is www.nfpa.org
